The Flint Hills of Kansas

by Jeff M

Photo 3: Within 12 hours, a hard rain would sweep across the prairie, restoring the land and invigorating the gamma and cord grasses, as well as the big blue stem. By mid-October, the grasses will reach as high as an adult waist. In the distance, black walnut trees indicate a water source --- in this case, an emerging spring that feeds the former Spring Hill Ranch in Chase County.

There are trees in abundance in the Flint Hills, but only along the many waterways, near the water sources, as noted. ;-) Neat photo!
